Love Alarm

πŸ‘‹    Hey, blog!

πŸŽ₯     This week we watched a popular K-drama titled Love Alarm. This K-drama was placed in a world where an app can alert you if someone nearby has a crush on you. In addition to that, we get to see how students are coping with their emotions and personal lives. Some appear to have it easy while others have to hide away hoping that they can eventually become the person they feel like they should be.

😁    I personally am a big fan of K-dramas. I feel like they help me escape the world and enter a place where all my idealistic hopes are possible. This K-drama, though, is not like your typical one. For starters, this one has a kiss scene right from the start. Normally, the most action we get is a handhold near episode 14. Still, I did enjoy watching this K-drama for the minor characters' storylines. I am a fan of the main cast, too, so watching this show was pleasant for me and I can't wait for season 2 which is coming out soon! (On a side note, I wanted to mention how some app creators have already formed an app similar to the one in Love Alarm. You can find it on the Play Store.)

πŸ’   One thing that I think is worth mentioning is how fans of K-dramas, or of any other kind of international show, should remember that what is portrayed on a show is not often an accurate representation of reality. I know that it's nice to think that we could escape to another country to live like a main character that we've seen in a show, but life will probably not be as nice as you expect it to be. Some fans of K-dramas or K-pop have traveled to Korea thinking that everyone would be like the people they've seen on a screen and are disillusioned when they find out that that's not the case. In order to protect ourselves, we must remember that visual culture can affect perspectives and it's important to not fall for it.

πŸ‘€    I would definitely recommend this series! There are many other awesome K-dramas that I would recommend to you too: True Beauty, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (Goblin), The Penthouse: War in Life, Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, Crash Landing on You, Itaewon Class, and Hotel del Luna.

  1. I agree! People should consider love carefully. They need to distinguish what is true love, not in the fantasy of love.

    1. I wonder how much these shows contribute to a false understanding of what love and relationships look like.

  2. I definitely agree , media plays a part in portraying the outside world and I think it's super important to remember that you shouldn't base your worldview around just media. I like to think about Mexico a lot when it comes to this because Hollywood really likes portraying Mexico as this strange desolate desert wasteland and some people do genuinely think that's how it looks. So I do agree that you shouldn't view the world through the scope of media alone.

    1. I once talked about something that happened to me in the subway in Cairo and half the people I was talking to were stunned that there was a subway in an African city. Movies like The Lion King had them thinking that there werent even cities in Africa let alone subways.

  3. I also think it’s important to mention that this app seems unreal but technology makes everything possible now a days. I definitely wouldn’t rely on that to determine my entire future but it would be interesting watching the world expand its technology like that.

Introduction

πŸ‘‹      Hello, blog! My name is Luisa. I'm a sophomore and I am planning on majoring in film studies. I'm currently in Chicago, Illinois.  ~~~ ❓    Why am I taking this course? Even though I'm not too fond of history because of how it requires me to remember names and dates, I chose to take this course because, in order to fully appreciate the art of film, I would need to know how it grew to become what we know it to be today. I look forward to watching many different films that will work alongside the readings to help us learn about the important milestones of film. I also hope to make connections with people who share my love for films this term! ~~~ 😷     I spent the majority of my time in quarantine napping and binge-watching stuff. I try to stay informed about the things that are going on in the world right now, but I also make sure to escape it a bit to not go crazy.

AKA Don Bonus

πŸ‘‹     Hey, blog! πŸŽ₯     This week's film was AKA Don Bonus . It was a documentary that showed the life of an Asian American high school student named Don.  πŸ‘    This film was very real and I was impressed by how Don took on the challenge to show his life as it was.  He recorded many hours of footage, but it was compressed to be less than an hour long. Even though it was a short film, we got to see his life on a personal level. We saw his life at home. We saw his life at school. We were even introduced to his family members and friends.  πŸ€”    While watching this film, I had many deja vu moments. He lived in a bad neighborhood where gunshots hit his house. Even young neighbors broke their windows. I used to live in a neighborhood just like that when I was younger. Seeing him struggle to stay on track in school reminded me of many of my old elementary school classmates. They were constantly conflicted with the urge to es...

K-Pop

πŸ‘‹     Hi, blog~! πŸŽ₯     This week we watched a few music videos by some of the most popular figures in the K-pop industry. We watched Psy's "Gangnam Style", BTS's "Boy with Luv", and Blackpink's "Ice Cream". In Korea, there are three main entertainment companies: YG Entertainment, SM Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment. Psy used to be under YG, but he later moved on to create his own label called P Nation. Blackpink is still under YG and BTS is under a different company called BigHit Entertainment. BigHit is a growing company that I predict will officially take over a spot as a 'top-three' very soon due to the popularity of BTS as well as their successful marketing strategies which are used to promote their sensational groups. Psy became a popular figure after the release of "Gangnam Style" which broke a very important YouTube record: the first person to reach 1 billion views. I recall hearing this song being played at alm...
